Dear Friends: January 12, 2012 Thank you for the financial support over the past few months. EPC has collected more than $24,000 toward the cost of intervening in the Carter case in which we received a bill for more than $50,000. We have received several new monthly donors by post-dated checks or by setting-up a monthly withdrawal on their credit card. The timing of the decision, in the Carter case is unknown. If Justice Smith decides to uphold the law, the BC Civil Liberties Association will appeal the decision to the BC Court of Appeal. If Justice Smith legislates from the bench, then the Attorney General of Canada (AG) will need to appeal the decision to the BC Court of Appeal immediately. The petition campaign was designed to encourage the (AG), Hon. Rob Nicholson, to do whatever is necessary to uphold Canada’s laws protecting people from euthanasia and assisted suicide. EPC successfully collected almost 31,000 signatures that are being sent to the AG. Please read the article in the newsletter concerning the petition and please write a hand-written letter to your Member of Parliament and the Hon. Rob Nicholson. Preliminary hearings for the Leblanc case in Trois-Rivières Quebec will begin on January 27. EPC is seeking intervener standing in the Leblanc case with Vivre dans la Dignité in Quebec. The Leblanc case is identical to the Rodriguez case (1993) which specifically seeks to strike down the law that protects people from assisted suicide. The Supreme Court of Canada has decided to hear the Rasouli case. EPC successfully intervened in the Rasouli case at the Ontario Court of Appeal (OCOA) who unanimously decided that doctors are required to obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. The Supreme Court of Canada in the Rasouli case will decide whether doctors are required to obtain consent before withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. EPC is seeking to intervene in the Leblanc case in Quebec, we will be intervening in the appeal of the Carter case and we will be intervening in the Supreme Court hearing of the Rasouli case. We are facing a gigantic challenge that can only be accomplished through your financial support. Please be generous. EPC is selling copies of the DVD set of the Third International Symposium on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide for $50 for 1 set or $80 for 2 sets. EPC is selling copies of the book - Keep Breathing, for $30 that was written by British author Adam Grace. Both items are excellent resources for those who are concerned about euthanasia. EPC is also distributing copies of the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care report. Anyone who donates $100 or more can request a copy of the report or request a copy of the book Keep Breathing. Thank you for your continued support. Please donate or continue donating to the ongoing cost of legally protecting everyone from euthanasia and assisted suicide. We now have almost 60 monthly donors who are donating by post-dated checks or by a monthly withdrawal from their credit card. Please be generous, we need your support.
