Dear Friends:

Bill C-62, the bill to delay the implementation of euthanasia for mental illness until March 2027 passed in Canada’s Senate last week. Passing this bill is one good step but it does not achieve our goal. Euthanasia for mental illness should never be considered and the euthanasia law must be reversed. We oppose killing people.

Our February 27 press conference and rally on Parliament Hill was a success. The National Post reported on the press conference and several CTV News local stations carried it live. We had an enthusiastic turnout to the rally and there were people representing many groups. The press conference featured the Hon Ed Fast, the MP who sponsored Bill C-314, that would have prevented euthanasia for mental illness, Paul Saba, a Montréal family physician, Lia Milousis, an Ottawa human rights lawyer, and myself (Alex Schadenberg). Now that euthanasia for mental illness is delayed (again), we have once again become concerned about child euthanasia. The government committee report issued in February 2023 advocated for extending euthanasia to “mature minors”.

We will host a Zoom meeting on March 14 titled, “Euthanasia in Canada. What’s Next?” (register here).

Compassionate Community Care (CCC) has an event in Toronto on May 25 for people grieving the loss of a loved one who died by euthanasia. Registration information can be found via www.beingwith.org/events

The US assisted suicide lobby has sponsored assisted suicide bills in 20 states. We have already had some significant successes. In the past two years, the lobby has failed to legalize assisted suicide in any new states but the sad news is that almost every US state that has legalized assisted suicide has now expanded their law.

In November 2023, I spoke with politicians in London, England, and in Jersey. In January 2024, I spoke with politicians in Slovenia. This month I will be speaking to politicians in the Isle of Man and Scotland. We also continue to communicate with Canadian and American politicians. It is your financial support that makes this possible. If you are not already, please consider becoming a monthly donor. Every donation is needed and appreciated. Thank you for all the ways you provide support of our work.

On March 24, I will be running in the Hamilton Around the Bay 30 km race. Please sponsor me by making a donation to the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC). Last year, I raised $17,000 and I am hoping to raise $20,000 this year.

Thank you for your support! We cannot defend and save lives without it.
